Meet Your Therapist, Homa.
If this is the first time we’re meeting, hello!
My name is Homa and my pronouns are she/her. I am the founder of Positive Perspectives which is proudly — a collective of diverse mental wellness practitioners that offer inclusive therapeutic services, located on Treaty 1 territory.
I am originally from The Pas Manitoba, but moved to Winnipeg after graduating high school when I was 18.
I had the privilege of attending university and pursued my post secondary education receiving my Master’s in Clinical and Counselling Psychology in 2014. I took a leap of faith and started my private practice as a Psychotherapist shortly after!
It might sound cliche but…
… being a therapist is something I always knew I wanted to do, like I’ve always felt it in my bones and in my spirit. I feel so grateful that I was able to find my passion at a young age — this is something I do not take for granted!
There is truly something magical that takes place during a session. I am not saying it’s easy or glamorous, honestly its often quite the opposite. But the magic is in the strength and resilience and vulnerability I have the privilege of witnessing in the human spirit. I am in awe of this everyday! It’s an absolute honour to be part of someone’s life in this unique kind of way.
The evolution of Positive Perspectives started when I worked as a solopreneur for many years after I graduated. But something always felt like it was missing. Positive Perspectives was meant to be so much more than just me.
I had always dreamed of…
… a safe haven where all humans could feel safe to do some of their most vulnerable personal development work and healing. To achieve this, I knew Positive Perspectives needed to have a diverse team that offered a wide range of unique and specialized services.
In 2020, mid-pandemic, it felt like the world needed a space like that more than ever. So that’s exactly what we created!
Fast forward to 2022, Positive Perspectives has blossomed into the small family run business of my dreams! With the help of my incredibly kind and business savvy husband, Eric (who has been so generous with his time and energy) — we have put our heads and our hearts together and expanded Positive Perspectives in a way that has already surpassed my wildest dreams!
We currently have…
… an extrodinary team of 6 (and soon to be 7!) practitioners Chantal, Recene, Sarah, Lucy, Natasha (and myself), and our creative associate Nicole who keeps us connected with you through this blog, social media, and so much more!
We have been able to reach all corners of our community to provide the mental, emotional and spiritual support to so many folx in need. Our practitioners connect with folx about a wide range of life experiences such as trauma, neurodiversity, anti-oppressive work, life transitions, 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, immigrants, grief, anxiety, depression, theraplay for children, and couple’s and family therapy — to name just a few!
While I could talk about my passion of our practice and what Positive Perspectives means to me -
I’ve been asked to share a little bit more about myself personally...
So, here we go!
While it’s tough to take my therapist hat off, I’ve been rocking a new hat this past year which is the MOM hat! I gave birth to my first child, Léo, in April 2021, and OMG! What a wild ride it has been. To top it off we have baby #2 on the way too. Eeek! I could write an entire blog post about the rollercoaster that is family planning and parenting (Hmm, maybe I will…) but let me just say motherhood has been the coolest, wildest and most beautifully chaotic experience of my life. I am absolutely in love with my little guy and so looking forward to watch him grow into the best big brother I know he’ll be. Léo is so easy-going, hilarious, and turning into quite the chatter box! Though, he just learned the word “no” recently… So this should be fun….
As you can imagine, managing a blossoming business and raising a toddler is no easy feat! If I’m not careful, I can easily become overwhelmed and anxious.
Some of the things I Iike to do to keep myself grounded and balanced…
… are going to therapy, being very intentional about who I surround myself with (A.K.A. People who fill my cup), disconnecting from social media, spending quality time with my husband in the evenings after Léo goes to sleep (we love our TV shows and movies), and of course I love me a good ol’ nap!
If you’ve been following along on my journey over the years, or you’re just meeting me for the first time as you read this, please know you are so appreciated and valued and I am truly grateful for each and everyone one of you.
XO,
Homa Houshmand, MSc, CCC
